Study Style Test ("we", "us") runs studystyletest.com, a learning style test and mock tests for Indian competitive exams. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who else handles it, how long we keep it and the rights you have. It is written to meet India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

What we collect

When you create an account

  • Your name, username and email address.
  • Your month and year of birth (not the full date), so that we know whether you are under 18.
  • Your password, which we store only as a bcrypt hash: a scrambled value that cannot be turned back into the password.
  • If you sign in with Google: the name, email address and Google account ID that Google shares with us. We never receive your Google password.
  • If you sign in with a one-time email code: the code, stored in hashed form and deleted after 5 minutes.

When you take the tests

  • Your answers to the learning style test, the time you took, your results, and the avatar (male, female or neutral) you choose for your result card.
  • Your answers to the study-habits questions, your study plan and your answers to the two-week check-in.
  • For mock tests: the answers you mark, the time you spend on each question, your scores and reports, and the questions you got wrong (for the mistake review).

When you pay (when payments are switched on)

  • Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card or other payment details go to Stripe directly; we never see or store your full card number.
  • We keep a record of each purchase: what you bought, the amount, the date, the payment method and Stripe's transaction reference.

If you are under 18

  • When we ask for a parent's or guardian's consent: their email address, the name they give and the date of their consent.

When you use the referral programme

  • Your referral code, the accounts that signed up with it, your reward balance and your payout requests.

When you contact us

  • Emails you send us, and bug reports you file from your account.
  • If a school or organisation asks us to host its test through the form on our home page: the name, organisation, email address, phone number and test details entered in the form, and the IP address and browser it was sent from.

Automatically

  • Sign-in records: the time, method and outcome of each sign-in attempt, with the IP address and the browser and device used. We use them to protect accounts from misuse and delete them after one year.
  • Usage statistics from Google Analytics: the pages you visit and a few actions (such as starting or finishing a test, signing up or starting a checkout), with your device type and approximate location. Google Analytics uses cookies. We switch it off for users under 18.
  • Error reports from Sentry: when something breaks, technical details of the error, the page and your browser.
  • On your device: your browser's local storage keeps your sign-in token and a few settings, such as your progress in an unfinished test, so that you stay signed in and do not lose your answers.

We do not ask for sensitive details such as health information, religion or caste, and the organisation form is the only place where we ask for a phone number.

How we use it

  • To run the service: score your tests, build your reports, save your progress, and show your mistake reviews and study plan.
  • To manage your account and sign-ins, including sending sign-in codes, password-reset messages and other service emails (sent through Brevo).
  • To process purchases and referral payouts.
  • To answer your messages and fix the problems you report.
  • To keep the service secure, for example by limiting repeated sign-in attempts and looking into suspicious activity.
  • To improve the service, using overall statistics (such as how long questions take, or how consistent the test's results are) and error reports.
  • To compare your mock test score with other students' scores. You see only overall figures, such as your percentile; no other student's name or answers are ever shown.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Shared result links

If you create a share link for your learning style result, anyone with the link can see that result: your main style, your top styles, your avatar choice and the date of the test. The link does not show your name, email address or answers. Keep the link to yourself if you do not want others to see the result.

Who else handles your data

We use these service providers to run Study Style Test. They handle data only to provide their service to us:

  • MongoDB Atlas: our database, hosted in Mumbai, India.
  • Render: our application server, hosted in the United States.
  • Tencent Cloud EdgeOne: delivers the website to your browser.
  • Brevo: sends our emails.
  • Google: Google Sign-In and Google Analytics.
  • Stripe: payments.
  • Sentry: error monitoring.

Some of these providers store or process data outside India, as Indian law currently allows. We may also disclose data when the law requires it, for example to a court or a government authority.

How long we keep it

  • Your account, test results and mock test attempts: for as long as you have an account.
  • Sign-in records: one year. One-time codes: 5 minutes. Unfinished test sessions: 2 hours.
  • Purchase records: for as long as tax and accounting laws require, even after the account is deleted.
  • When you ask us to delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days, apart from the purchase records above. Copies in our backups are overwritten after a few more weeks.

Your rights

Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can:

  • ask for a summary of the personal data we hold about you and of how we use it;
  • ask us to correct, complete or update it;
  • ask us to delete it, which also withdraws your consent (this does not undo what was done before, and you will no longer be able to use your account);
  • nominate another person to exercise these rights for you if you die or become unable to act;
  • complain to us and, if you are not satisfied with our answer, to the Data Protection Board of India.

You can download your data, or delete your account, yourself: on your Account page, under "Your data". For anything else, email us at studystyletest@gmail.com from the email address of your account. We reply within 30 days.

Children

Many of our users are school students. We ask everyone for their month and year of birth, and if you are under 18:

  • please use Study Style Test only with the consent of your parent or lawful guardian;
  • we may ask for your parent's or guardian's email address and send them a link to give their consent, and until they do, you may not be able to take tests;
  • we collect no usage statistics about you: Google Analytics is switched off for your account, and on the device you use.

We do not use anyone's personal data, and certainly not a child's, for advertising.

How we protect it

Data travels between your browser and our servers over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and our database encrypts the data it stores. Passwords and one-time codes are kept only in hashed form, and only the people who run Study Style Test can use the admin tools. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your personal data, we will tell you and the Data Protection Board as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. For important changes, we will also tell you on the site or by email.
